Are you one of the millions that suffer from allergies? Managing triggers outside of your home can be difficult and are often beyond your control. Lucky for you, allergies and asthma triggers within the home can be greatly reduced with the right house cleaning strategies.
Try our house cleaning tips to target areas of your home that may be making your symptoms worse.
If you have carpeted rooms and/or pets, then vacuuming regularly can greatly cut down on allergens. Some of the “nasties” that can settle in your carpets and rugs are pet dander and dust mites. Running the vacuum once or twice a week will help clean these areas. Don’t forget to vacuum under the bed! Sleeping over a very dusty area can greatly increase your allergy symptoms.
Go the extra mile and use a vacuum that has a HEPA filter — or high-efficiency particulate filter.
Choose rugs that are washable so that they can be laundered on a regular basis.
If you have a lot of carpeting, it may be worth considering removing the carpets and replacing with an easier to maintain and clean hard surface floor.
Launder Linens Often
Make sure to not only change your bedding regularly, but also to wash them in hot water to eliminate allergy irritants. This includes bath towels as well. Just because you can’t see the dust on your linens, doesn’t mean it’s not there!
Clean your Vents and Ductwork
The National Air Duct Cleaners Association recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years. If there is a build-up of debris, dirt, mold, or other irritants it can be extremely beneficial for your health to have them routinely inspected and cleaned.
Choose your Cleaning Products Wisely
Many of the most common cleaners contain harsh chemicals that can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms. There are better cleaning products for asthma sufferers out there. many are fragrance-free and eco-friendly.
