Wash Your Hands

“Wash your hands!” This is the mantra for these uncertain times. It makes sense as handwashing is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family from getting sick.

We wanted to take a moment to share with you some guidelines straight from the experts. You can find their recommendations below:

Wash Your Hands Often to Stay Healthy

You can help yourself and your loved ones stay healthy by washing your hands often, especially during these key times when you are likely to get and spread germs:

  • Before, during, and after preparing food
  • Before eating food
  • Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick
  • Before and after treating a cut or wound
  • After using the toilet
  • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
  • After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste
  • After handling pet food or pet treats
  • After touching garbage

Follow Five Steps to Wash Your Hands the Right Way

Washing your hands is easy, and it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community—from your home and workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals.

Follow these five steps every time you wash your hands:

  1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
  2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
  3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
  4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
  5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

Use Hand Sanitizer When You Can’t Use Soap and Water to Wash your Hands

Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs in most situations. If soap and water are not readily available when you need to wash your hands, you can use an alcohol-based hand-sanitizer contains at least 60% alcohol. You can tell if the sanitizer contains at least 60% alcohol by looking at the product label.

Sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of germs on hands in many situations. However,

  • Sanitizers do not get rid of all types of germs.
  • Hand sanitizers may not be as effective when hands are visibly dirty or greasy.
  • Hand sanitizers might not remove harmful chemicals from hands like pesticides and heavy metals.

Caution! Swallowing alcohol-based hand sanitizers can cause alcohol poisoning if more than a couple of mouthfuls are swallowed. Keep it out of reach of young children and supervise their use.

How to use hand sanitizer

  • Apply the gel product to the palm of one hand (read the label to learn the correct amount).
  • Rub your hands together.
  • Rub the gel over all the surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are dry. This should take around 20 seconds.

There are a lot of make-it-yourself ideas floating around the internet right now. Like using vodka as a hand sanitizer. That will NOT be effective. Always refer to the experts when contemplating mixing up your own product. For a do-it-yourself hand-sanitizer we would suggest following the CDC guidelines by using at least 60% alcohol. You may fill some small spray bottles and add a few drops of an essential oil to give it a nice scent.

Protect you and your loved ones from the spread of germs…Wash your Hands!

CDC Recommendations for Disinfecting

In these uncertain times, we are hyper-aware of the need to maintain a healthy home and body.  The CDC is a great place to start when looking for the most accurate information and effective solutions. Please find below CDC recommendations for disinfecting.  These can also be found at the CDC website.

Cleaning and Disinfecting Surfaces

It is critical to read and follow the safety instructions on any product you use. For disinfection, diluted household bleach solutions, alcohol solutions with at least 70% alcohol, and most common EPA-registered household disinfectants should be effective.  Below are the most important safety guidelines when using sanitizing products:

  • Never mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleaner
  • Wear rubber or other non-porous boots, gloves, and eye protection
  • Try not to breathe in product fumes. If using products indoors, open windows and doors to allow fresh air to enter
  • Use regular unscented 5%—6% household bleach
  • Unexpired household bleach will be effective against coronaviruses when properly diluted
  • Prepare a bleach solution by mixing: 5 tablespoons (1/3rd cup) bleach per gallon of water

When using a bleach mixture, for surfaces that do not soak up water (examples: floors, stoves, sinks, countertops, plates, and tools):

  1. Clean surface with soap and water first
  2. Rinse with clean water
  3. Sanitize using the directed mixture
  4. Allow to air dry

For soft (porous) surfaces such as carpeted floor, rugs, and drapes, remove visible contamination if present and clean with appropriate cleaners indicated for use on these surfaces. After cleaning:

  • Launder items as appropriate in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. If possible, launder items using the warmest appropriate water setting for the items and dry items completely, or use products with the EPA-approved emerging viral pathogens claims that are suitable for porous surfaces.

Hand Hygiene

  • Household members should clean hands often, including immediately after removing gloves and after contact with an ill person, by washing hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available and hands are not visibly dirty, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol may be used. However, if hands are visibly dirty, always wash hands with soap and water.
  • Household members should follow normal preventive actions while at work and home including recommended hand hygiene and avoiding touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.

We hope you have found value in this CDC recommendations for disinfecting information and as always, feel free to contact us about home home cleaning and organizing needs at 248-844-3191.

9 Benefits of Humidifiers and How to Clean Them

In the midst of winter, the air is so dry and our skin really feels it. That is why most of us choose to use a humidifier in our home. Below, we list 9 benefits of humidifiers and then we explain house to clean humidifiers.

  1. Improve the air quality in your home
  2. Prevent dry, itchy skin
  3. Prevent dry eyes and nosebleeds
  4. Moisture in the air makes your home feel warmer
  5. Prevent static
  6. Prevent damage to wood furniture and floors
  7. May help to relieve allergy symptoms
  8. Help prevent airborne illnesses; researchers have found that humidity levels above 40% rapidly deactivate virus particles
  9. Reduce snoring

We can see from the list above that the benefits are numerous! While it is highly recommended to use a humidifier in your home, it is just as important to sanitize your humidifier often. The most important reason why you should keep your humidifier clean is to prevent spreading potentially harmful bacteria and mold into the air. Without frequent disinfection and cleaning, the water in your humidifier will become stagnate. Which means, if your humidifier is being used without properly disinfecting it, you run the risk of releasing contaminated water vapor into the air. We know you don’t want to be breathing that in!  We all want to maintain the benefits of humidifiers in our homes.

Here is one way to keep your unit clean and disinfected so you can maximize all of those benefits:

  1. Each time you add water to your unit, make sure to empty any standing water from the basin and wipe out the water well. When refilling, use distilled water if possible. It has less minerals in it.
  2. Every few days, take a some time to give the unit a thorough cleaning and disinfecting
  3. First, unplug the unit from the wall and empty any remaining water into the sink
  4. Second, disassemble all of the parts
  5. If your humidifier has a filter, you may use cool running water to rinse this and then allow it to air dry while cleaning the rest of the unit
  6. Using a toothbrush and undiluted white vinegar, scrub to remove any scale build-up. If necessary, you may allow the vinegar to soak in the water reservoir for about 30 minutes before beginning to scrub
  7. Then, using a mixture of 1 tsp of bleach to 1 gallon of water (preferably, distilled) fill the tank about halfway. Close the lid tightly, then swirl the mixture around to coat all inside surfaces of the tank. Allow to sit for about 30 minutes.
  8. Afterwards, rinse all parts thoroughly until the bleach scent is eliminated. This may take a few rinses.
  9. Once all parts are rinsed thoroughly, allow to air dry before reassembling the unit.

There you have it! We hope you this article helped you realize more benefits of humidifiers in your home.  Now you can breathe easy. Your health and home will thank you for it!

Six Ways to Beat the Winter Blues in Rochester Hills, MI

As February draws close, we all start to feel a little stir crazy being indoors more than we would like. We miss the sun, the smell of flowers, the green of the grass, etc.  Many of us experience the winter blues in Rochester Hills, MI!  Here we will give you six ways to beat the winter blues.

The winter blues is a very real thing. One great idea for combating the “cooped up” feeling is to surround yourself, and your home, with scents that give you a mood pick-me-up.

The power of scent cannot be underestimated. In addition to being the sense most closely linked to our memories, smell also triggers emotions. The perfume industry spends vast amounts of money based on this connection! So, what are some ways to bring the power of scent into our home? It can be much more than just spraying an artificial freshener into the air.

Here are some great ways to fill your home with scent, and get yourself out of the winter doldrums:

  1. A bouquet of flowers: This is a great one for also reminding us that spring is just around the corner. They not only brighten up our space, but they smell amazing.
  2. Plants: While most of them do not have a scent, they are great air purifiers!
  3. Stovetop Potpourri: This is an amazing way to not only fill the air with scent, but it also humidifies the air at the same time. Your dry, winter skin will thank you. Take a medium or large pot and fill with water. Add items like lemon & rosemary, or lime & mint, or go spicy with ginger & cinnamon. Let the water heat up to a simmer. As the water evaporates, keep adding more water. Be creative and try different ingredients!
  4. Use an essential oil diffuser: There are so many essential oil fragrances out there. Just do your research to find a reputable brand that uses true essential oils and not just fillers.
  5. Bake something delicious: Not only will your taste buds thank you, but you will get to enjoy the warm and yummy scent of dessert while it bakes.
  6. Change your air filters: This is great to do anytime of year, but especially with all of the germs floating around in winter… keep your air as clean as possible by swapping out your air filters.

We provided six ways to beat the winter blues.   Do you have any additional ideas that you could share with our readers?

How To Clean Your Coffee Maker

We all love our morning “cuppa joe” and we don’t want anything getting in the way of that amazing, rich taste. So, when you start noticing that your coffee isn’t tasting it’s absolute best… it’s probably time to show your coffee maker some extra love!  Below, we will provide detail for how to clean your coffee maker, this includes the drip coffee makers and the single use coffee makers.

For Drip Coffee Makers:

  1. Empty your coffee pot of any leftover coffee. Be sure to also remove the used filter and grounds.
  2. Nothing beats the cleaning power of white vinegar. Fill your coffee pot’s reservoir with equal parts vinegar and water (4-5 cups of each).  Place an empty filter into the coffee maker’s basket, place the pot in position, and turn the machine on to “brew” the solution.
  3. Once the brewing cycle has completed, turn off the coffee maker and allow the vinegar/water solution to sit for about 15-30 minutes.
  4. Finally, replace the filter once again and fill the reservoir with just water. Brew the water by itself for two cycles. This will remove any remaining vinegar left in the machine.
  5. Once the three cycles are completed, your coffee maker will be ready to brew some amazing tasting coffee once again.

For Single-Use Coffee Makers:

  1. Empty the coffee maker of any water and make sure there isn’t a pod in the machine.
  2. Add a solution of 1/2 cup vinegar and 1 cup water to the coffee maker’s reservoir. Keep the pod area empty.
  3. Turn on the coffee maker to “brew” the solution through the machine. Once the brewing cycle is complete, shut off the coffee maker and allow the vinegar solution to sit for 15 minutes.
  4. Brew water-only through the machine for two more cycles. This will get rid of any remaining vinegar taste. Get ready to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee!
